The Sé Velha de Coimbra is the only one of the Portuguese Romanesque cathedrals of the time of the Reconquest to have survived relatively intact until today.
Seen from the outside, the Old Cathedral resembles a small castle, with high walls crowned with battlements and few narrow windows. The appearance of fortress is common to the cathedrals of the time and is explained by the warlike climate of the Reconquista.
The Sé Velha de Coimbra is one of the most important Romanesque buildings in Portugal. The construction of the Cathedral began sometime after the Battle of Ourique (1139), when Afonso Henriques declared himself king of Portugal and chose Coimbra as the capital of the kingdom. Sé is buried D. Sesnando, Count of Coimbra.
