Poet, engineer, Joaquim Maria Moreira Cardozo was born in Recife, on January 26, 1897, the son of a modest bookkeeper. In his youth he participated in the nightly bohemian reefs, with figures like the poet Ascenso Ferreira and others. In 1934, he was one of the first calculating engineers of the Rio-Petrópolis road.
In 1939, after a tour of Europe, he returned to Recife; gets in friction with the then federal intervener in Pernambuco, Agamenon Magalhães, and moves to Rio de Janeiro, where he joins the group formed by intellectuals Manuel Bandeira, Pedro Nava, Augusto Meyer, Lúcio Costa and others.
For many years, he lived between the two cities: Rio and Recife. He entered the literature under the influence of a brother who was a Parnassian poet. In 1914, he published cartoons in the Diário de Pernambuco. His first modernist poem was published by the press in 1934.
The first book ("Poems") was published in 1947, when the poet was 50 years old. Then came the other books: "Little Pernambucan Anthology" (1948); "Prelude and Elegy of a Farewell" (1952); "Star Sign" (1960); "Colonel Macambira" (1963); "Trivium" (1964); "Collection of Modern Theater" (The Foreman of Salema, Antonio Conselheiro and Marechal Boi de Carros, 1965); "From a Party Night" (1971); "Complete Poems" (1971); "Angels and Demons of God" (1973); "The Interior of Matter" (1976).
As an engineer, he joined Oscar Niemeyer's team in the construction of Brasilia, having made calculations of the structures of the palaces of Planalto and Alvorada and the building with the National Congress. He died in Recife on November 4, 1978. Posthumous publications: "A Burning Book and Nine Dark Songs", Brazilian Civilization Publisher / Fundarpe, 1981; "Selected Poems" (1997, organized by César Leal).
