The river João de Tiba is born 135 km away from its mouth in Santa Cruz Cabrália in the Serra das Aimorés on the border of Bahia and Minas Gerais. In a short distance the city of Eunápolis where it receives the name of river Santa Cruz.
Of vital importance to the city of Santa Cruz Cabrália, its estuary is quite interesting and shelters a huge area of mangrove.
Today it is the main tourist attraction of the municipality with boat trips like barges and schooners.
